What is family and medical leave?

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) entitles employees of covered employers to take advantage of unpaid, job-protected leave for medical and family reasons. It requires employers to continue health benefits under the same conditions and terms.

What does family and medical leave cover?

For eligible employees, family and medical leave often provides 12-26 weeks of time off, depending on eligibility, for the following:

• Caring for a child, parent, or spouse with a serious health condition
• Caring for a newborn child within one year of their birth
• Caring for a newly placed adopted or foster care child within one year
• Having a serious health condition that prevents you from performing your job duties
• Having a covered military spouse, son, daughter, or parent with a serious illness or injury

Who is eligible for family and medical leave?

You may be eligible for family and medical leave if:

• Your work location has at least 50 employees within a 75-mile radius 
• You had at least 1,250 hours of service with your employer in the 12 months before your family and medical leave
• Have worked for an FMLA-covered employer for at least 12 months

What are the steps for applying for family and medical leave?

To be accepted for family and medical leave, you or your employer can fill out a basic leave request form to give your notice. Your employer will let you know whether you qualify and what the next steps are.

AWS Services and Nursing, Inc. offers medical certifications for family and medical leave. Dr. Williams can fill it out for you or a family member. She may recommend a physical exam, lab work, mental health evaluation, and/or additional diagnostic tests.
